Menopause Ceremony
The postmenopausal period is a good time for mental exercises as hormone secretion balances as it slows down. Homeopathic remedies are best for menopausal problems, but if there are no problems, no medications are needed. Diet is of great importance.
Have on hand:
4 Red Candles
1 Yellow Candle
Director:
Welcome to (Celebrant's Name) menopausal ceremony!
A little girl has 100,000 eggs in her body, she sheds a few hundred during her lifetime, (she may give birth to a few children) and then the egg factory wants to rest. During menopause, a woman may feel completely at the mercy of her hormones, but menopause can also be the beginning of a new, more balanced phase in a woman’s life.
As Margaret Mead has said, "There is no greater power in the world than the gunpowder of a postmenopausal woman."
In her book Menopause, Gail Sheehy comments: “Once the ovaries have moved into a new state of being, a new kind of balance begins in a woman’s life; now that she is no longer shackled to the mold assigned to a woman by culture as a sexual object and childbirth, her feminine and masculine sides can finally unite. As he rises above the gender definitions, he gets a new kind of permission to say what he thinks and do what he wants. ”
Quoting Karen Blixen: "Once women have reached another age where they are freed from the burden of being a woman and can give free power to their powers, they are probably the most powerful of the creatures created by the Creator."
4 red candles are used.
Now we celebrate the end of (Celebrant's Name) period. We ask the Great Goddess to bless her with health, vitality and joy. Squeeze the glasses with the red drink: Good luck, joy, energy!
Celebrant lights the candles saying:
- I light the 1st candle on the menstrual blood that ran out.
- I light the 2nd candle for my health (and my children).
- I light the 3rd candle for the splendor of my femininity.
- I light a 4th candle for menstrual (and childbirth) pains that ended happily.
Light the yellow candle.
Director Says:
I will set you free, says the Goddess of the Red Ray. I will receive you, says the Goddess of the Yellow Ray. I invite you to grow in wisdom, I will take you to me like a new maiden.
Celebrant says:
My period is over. I have come home to rest. Thank the Yellow Ray Goddess, protect me and help me grow.
Everyone hugs celebrant and sits down and talks about their menopausal experiences.
The ceremony has been inspired by Rites of Passage for Menopause; Zsuzsanna E. Budapest; The Grandmother of Time, Harper & Row, San Francisco.
